Working as a manager has made me a better employee. I learned the importance of speaking up and sharing ideas because more communication leads to better and more efficient teamwork. Common goals are only achievable with a shared understanding of what is happening.
Office Manager/Intern Coordinator: Monroe County Democratic Committee
Hired approx 50 interns. All but 2 completed the program.
As the Intern Coordinator for MCDC, I had to balance the committee’s priorities with the desires of our interns to take on more advanced tasks. I helped them learn the importance of entry-level work, including constituent services and contacts. While cold calling is difficult, it is essential for anyone in politics, government, social services, communications, business, etc.
Manager on Duty: American University Recreation and Fitness
Supervisor: AU Intramural Sports
Supervising a rotating set of students, up to 4 at once
These experiences helped me learn the importance of listening carefully to my staff’s questions and asking them for specifics to ensure we were doing our work correctly. I learned to slow down and determine what I may have missed before assuming the worst.
Unit Head: Camp Seneca Lake
Supervised 15 staff and 50 campers split into four bunks for four months
worked directly with and delegated to my staff to ensure our work was consistently above the standards set by the camp. It was my job to ensure all of my unit's cabins were supervised and cared for correctly. I inspected living spaces, supported campers as needed, and corrected issues as they arose. I learned to be clear with my staff about what I needed and listen to them to ensure they had the tools to accomplish the tasks ahead of them.
